  • Description

Two young West German jet pilots who had been held by the Czech authorities since Oct. 22 returned to Bonn for questioning, Dec. 3, after being released on the frontier at Waidhaus the previous day.

The two pilots, 23-year-old Rolf Hofmann and 29-year-old Helmut Kraus, whose sudden disappearance without trace caused great concern in NATO circles, are now understood to have flown across the frontier into Czechoslovakia by accident and to have baled out while their jet fighters crashed on Czech territory.

Before being released by the Czechs they were told that criminal proceedings against them had been dropped and that they were being expelled as undesirable persons. Czechoslovakia has several times protested against alleged violations of her western border by West German and American aircraft.
