  • Description

West Germany retained its provisional lead int he Admiral's Cup series off the Isle of Wight (UK) on Wednesday (8 August), when its top yacht 'Saudade' completed a double triumph in the second of the two inshore races.

Saudade, skippered by Albert Buell, won the 30-mile(48 KM) event when it finished three minutes clear of Morning Cloud, owned by Britain's Prime Minister, Edward Heath, and under the command of Owen Parker.

Saudade, with the first of the two inshore events safely won, kept West Germany ahead in the provisional points list, although on Wednesday night, they were only a slender five points ahead of the powerful Australian challenge.

Saudade was backed up by another West German entry, Rubin, which came home in the second race in sixth place. The Australians, who won the trophy in 1967, held their challenge with fifth, eight and tenth positions.

SYNOPSIS: After passing the French yacht "Revolution", Argentina's swift "Recluta-Three" took every advantage of the wind and held off a challenge from Britain's Frigate to finish the event in third place.

The yachts packed the field at the start of the thirty mile inshore race, but at the halfway mark, the field was strung out to almost one and a half miles. Racing conditions were ideal, but it didn't do much to help the Brazilian entrants. Two of their team, including WA-WA-TOO-Three sailed the wrong course, while the third Brazilian entrant, Saga, ran aground and fell right back on the day's points score.

Tough, but on Wednesday, the Australian yacht Apollo-Two just couldn't nudge ahead of Saudade, now five points in the lead overall.
