  • Description

PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA CONDEMNED THE SOVIET INTERVENTION IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA WHEN HE ADDRESSED TRAINEES AT THE SCHOOL OF MILITARY TRAINING, KALEWA BARRACKS, IN NDOLA ON SATURDAY. THE THEME OF THE PRESIDENT'S SPEECH WAS HUMANISM -- A FORM OF AFRICAN SOCIALISM WHICH IS THE OFFICIAL IDEOLOGY OF ZAMBIA'S RULING UNITED NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE PARTY.

PRESIDENT KAUNDA SAID ZAMBIA DISAGREED WITH MOST OF THE THINGS COMMUNIST THINK, SAY AND DO, BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE IDEOLOGY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN MAN -- CONTRARY TO HUMANISM WHICH PUT MAN ABOVE ALL THINGS. HE SAID AND EXAMPLE OF THE PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE THAT COMMUNISTS PUT ON IDEOLOGY WAS DEMONSTRATED WHEN THE PEOPLE OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA DECIDED TO FOLLOW THEIR OWN PATH AND THE RUSSIANS "USED THEIR MIGHT TO CRUSH THE FREE-THINKING PEOPLE OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA."
"THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF WHAT I MEAN WHEN I SAY THEY PLACE IDEOLOGY ABOVE MEN", PRESIDENT KAUNDA SAID, ADDING: "WE OBVIOUSLY CONDEMN THIS AS WRONG -- IT'S UNHUMAN AND NOT RIGHT AT ALL."
THE PRESIDENT ALSO CRITICISED CAPITALISM. "ONCE YOU ALLOW MONEY TO BE YOUR MASTER THERE IS NO END TO WHAT YOU WILL DO TO EXPLOIT YOUR FELLOW MAN", HE SAID, AND WENT ON: "WE HAVE GOT TO STICK TO OUR OWN HUMANISM, IN WHICH MAN COMES FIRST."
