  • Description

In Madrid, two underground trains collided in the centre of the city on Monday (8 May). More than 100 people were injured, ten of them seriously.

SYNOPSIS: The crash was the fourteenth on Madrid's metro in two years, and the second serious crash in only four days. Ambulances, taxis, police and private motorists fought through heavy traffic to rush the injured to hospital.

A police doctor on the scene said one train ploughed into the back of another which was stopped between two stations under central Madrid. A passenger in the last car of the stationary train told reporters he saw the other train coming, and yelled 'hit the floor'. Dazed passengers, some of them bleeding, tumbled from the train in the underground darkness. they helped each other, and the injured, down the tracks to the nearest station where they were carried on stretchers to the surface. Rescue workers had trouble in freeing passengers from the twisted wreckage. When the injured were brought to the surface, there were more problems as rescue vehicles fought rush-hour traffic on their way to nearby hospitals.

Only four days previously, another one-hundred people had been injured in a metro crash in Madrid, when a train overshot a station and crashed into the buffers. The final count in the latest accident showed that 114 people were injured.
