Background: Russian swimmers enjoyed an invigorating walk by the sea at Blackpool, U.K., Apr 30, before going on to the Darby Baths, where Britain scored a resounding victory over them on the final day of a two-day international swimming match, by 106 points to 75. Britain had led at the end of the first day by 54 points to 42.

Nineteen-year-old Richard Campion from Stoke Newington, figured in the thrilling first race of the day, when he beat Russian A. Papko, in the 1,650 yards freestyle. After a close struggle, Campion forged ahead in a last-minute spurt to beat Papko by six feet amidst very enthusiastic cheering from the crowd. At the half-mile he broke that English record for the distance with a time of 9 mins. 58.2 secs. His time for the race 18 mins. 52.4 secs.

Later, British girls scored successes as Nan Rae easily won the womens' 440 yards freestyle in 5 mins. 5.1 secs., and Natalie Stewart won the 110 yards backstroke event in 1 min. 12.6 secs.

Britain's Ian Black, who set up a European record for the 440 yards on the first day, failed on the final day to recapture the European 220 yards Butterfly record which he recently lost to an Italian swimmer. Russian A. Atonjan won the 220 yards breast stroke in 2 mins. 42 secs, but the Russian team won only three of the fifteen events in the match.
