  • Description

In Tokyo, Japanese ministers and a delegation from the European Economic Community began talks on Monday (13 February) aimed at reducing Japan's trade surplus with the nine European countries. The discussions got under way less than 24 hours after Britain's Trade Minister Edmund Dell said in London that Britain and other western countries might be forced into protectionist action to halt the trade imbalance.

SYNOPSIS: The Japanese Foreign Ministry building was the venue for the talks, which were due to last for four days. The European Community delegation is headed by Mr. Benedict Maynell, director of relations with Japan. Japan is represented by senior officials of eight government agencies, including the Foreign, Finance and Trade ministers.

Report issued after the first day of talks said the EEC delegation had called on Japan to increase her imports. The EEC members hope this will reduce the huge trade deficit the Community has with Japan, Figures for last year showed that Japan had a 5,000 million dollar surplus in its trade dealings with the European Community. Observers said Japan was adopting a cautious attitude to the talks.
