  • Description

In a church at Bournemouth a boy of eleven has been installed bishop.

The ceremony was in the Church of St. James the Greater at Pokesdown. At the beginning the retiring boy bishop, Peter GREEN, presented his successor to the Vicar. Robert DANIELS has been elected by the children of the church, and before he was installed some of them recognised him in this traditional way. Then Bishop and bishop-elect moved to the Altar. This was the fifth ceremony of the kind to be held at Pokesdown, where five years ago the church revived a custom that's been little known in England since the Reformation. The boy took office as all bishops do, by receiving the cross . . . the stole . . . then the ring . . . the mitre. . . and finally the staff.

Then it was time for him to take over his charge - again in the traditional way. Outside the church the Boy bishop made his way again to the main entrance.

As he knocked three times the wardens opened the doors. And, led by choristers, Robert Daniels entered into his year as the children's representative in the life of a church.
