    INDIA'S BIGGEST CITY -- CALCUTTA -- TODAY (FRIDAY) CONTINUED IN THE GRIP OF THE PARALYSING 48-HOUR GENERAL STRIKE WHICH BEGAN YESTERDAY. THE COMMUNIST LED ALLIANCE OF LEFTWING OPPOSITION PARTIES CALLED THE STRIKE TO PROTEST AGAINST FOOD SHORTAGES AND RISING PRICES.

    POLICE ESCORTED BUSES IN CALCUTTA TODAY AFTER A NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAD BEEN ARRESTED FOR STONING BUSES. MOST SHOPS REMAINED CLOSED, BUT POLICE REPORT IMPROVEMENTS ON YESTERDAY WHEN THE STRIKE BROUGHT THE CITY ALMOST TO A STANDSTILL. SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES ALSO REMAINED CLOSED.

    THE ENTIRE WEST BENGAL POLICE FORCE, TOGETHER WITH SIX POLICE BATTALIONS "FROM OTHER INDIAN - STATES, IS STANDING BY TO DEAL WITH VIOLENCE. ON THE EVE OF THE STRIKE, THE POLICE ARRESTED ABOUT 5,000 PEOPLE, AND MORE HAVE BEEN ARRESTED SINCE.

    LEADERS OF THE STRIKE HAVE CONGRATULATED WORKERS ON WHAT THEY CALLED A MAGNIFICENT RESPONSE AND APPEALED TO THEM TO MAKE THE REST OF THE STOPPAGE ALSO A SUCCESS. THE WEST BENGAL STATE'S RULING CONGRESS PARTY EARLIER URGED THE PEOPLE, THROUGH POSTERS AND PUBLIC MEETINGS, NOT TO TAKE PART IN THE STRIKE.

    IT'S THE THIRD STRIKE IN CALCUTTA THIS YEAR. THE FIRST LAST FEBRUARY LED TO RIOTS IN WHICH AT LEAST 40 PEOPLE DIED. THE SECOND, LAST MAY, BROUGHT CALCUTTA BUSINESSES TO A STANDSTILL BUT NO MAJOR INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED.
