Andre Rousseau, a garage owner of Choupeau in France's Charente Maritime region, has invented an engine driven by self-produced compressed air.
Following hard on the heels of the recent announcement by Rolls-Royce of a motor car engine able to run on any kind of fuel ... from paraffin to pea-nut butter ... M. Rousseau's compressed air engine suggests that the day is not far distant when petrol combustion engines will be no longer necessary.
The principle of the compressed air machine is simple. A 10-gallon tank is filled with air by a hand pump to a pressure of about 8 kilos. This air is fed through a pipe -- by means of a cock -- and introduced into a cylinder which moves a piston. As this piston is forced down the cylinder, an outside arm affixed to a wheel draws another piston through a cylinder, thus sucking outside air through a valve and forcing it into the storage tank. With pressure in the tank again built up, the procedure repeats itself again and again.
M. Rousseau states that the compressed air engine is more powerful than the average petrol combustion unit. When filmed it had been running non-stop for five nights and days ... operating a wood saw.
