  • Description

Exploding fireworks killed five people and injured 150 others at this year's annual festival of the temples in Kerala, Southern India. The press Trust of India news agency (PTI) reported that the fireworks were rockets fired by a group taking part in a competition. The deaths and injuries occurred when the rockets exploded among a crowd of festival celebrants.

SYNOPSIS: The annual Hindu Pooram Temple Festival, Held at Trichur, is one of the whole of south India, and attracts up to 400,000 people. The city's two main temples send rival elephant processions out into the streets, each trying to outdo the other in the splendour of the animals and trappings.

Decorative silken umbrellas carried on the elephants are a focal point of competition. The rival processions continually change the style and colour of their umbrellas to create a vivid display for the crowds. Under the canopies, on the middle animal in the line of 15, rides each temple's main deity
The competition does not end with the setting sun. The morning after the elephant procession, the temple worshippers meet again to compete in musical skills.
