Al-Jazari is described by Sotheby's as probably the greatest Medieval Islamic technologist ever and the manuscript auctioned was the second earliest copy still available. The previous record paid for a Persian art treasure was 280,00 pounds sterling (540,000 U.S. dollars) in 1976 at Christies, another major auction house in London.

Background: A world record price of 310,000 pounds sterling (600,000 U.S. dollars) was paid at an auction in London on Monday (3 April) for a rare Persian manuscript, believed to be more than 400 years old. Reuters reports that the buyer, who refused to give his name, was a wealthy Iranian art collector.

SYNOPSIS: The auction took place at Sotheby's in London, one of the world's leading auction houses. And the manuscript of Al-Jazari's "Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices" was one of the main features of the house's Spring Islamic Series of auctions.
