    THE PRESIDENT OF DAHOMEY, DR. EMILE ZINSOU THIS WEEKEND VISITED THE AGRICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX AT AGONVY IN THE ADJOHON PROVINCE.

    THE PRESIDENT WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE MINISTER FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT, MR. ADRIEN GUELE, AND BY THE FRENCH AND GERMAN AMBASSADORS TO DAHOMEY. THE DEVELOPMENT HAS BEEN FINANCED BY A GRANT FROM THE EUROPEAN DEVELOPMENT FUND OF OVER NEARLY TWO BILLION FRANCS CFA.

    THE PROJECT HAS OVER 7000 HECTARES OF LAND UNDER PALM TREES, AND ANOTHER 7000 HECTARES ANNUAL CROPS. AT THE MOMENT 27000 PEOPLE ARE INVOLVED IN THE DEVELOPMENT, AND THE PLAN WILL IN FUTURE ORGANISE THEM IN AGRICULTURAL CO-OPERATIVES. INITIALLY ELEVEN CO-OPERATIVES WILL BE SET UP, EACH WITH 3,500 PEOPLE. LATER FIVE CO-OPERATIVES WILL BE UNITED IN A CO-OPERATIVE UNION WHICH WILL RUN A PALM-OIL PLANT AT IKPINLE.

    THE AGONVY DEVELOPMENT WAS STARTED IN 1967, WHILE DR. ZINSOU WAS ECONOMIC AND PLANNING MINISTER. HIS VISIT IS INTENDED TO UNDERLINE THE IMPORTANCE WHICH HIS GOVERNMENT ATTACHES TO THE ROLE OF SIMILAR AGRICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL PROJECTS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COUNTRY'S ECONOMY.
