  • Description

THE RIVER RHINE EDGED TO WITHIN A FEW YARDS (METRES) OF THE DOORS, OF THE BUNDESTAG (FEDERAL PARLIAMENT) IN BONN YESTERDAY (FEBRUARY 24) AS TORRENTIAL RAIN AND MELTING SNOW CAUSED FLOOD HAVOC THROUGHOUT WEST GERMANY. AT LEAST EIGHT PEOPLE HAVE DROWNED IN BAVARIA AND LOWER SAXONY IN FLOODWATER WHICH HAVE SWEPT THROUGH DOZENS OF RHINESIDE TOWNS.

THE LEVEL OF THE RHINE IN BONN WAS YESTERDAY MEASURED AT 19-FEET (FIVE METRES) ABOVE NORMAL. PATHS AND ROADS ALONGSIDE THE RIVER WERE COMPLETELY UNDER WATER, AND EMERGENCY RESCUE TEAMS WERE SENT IN THE HELP EVACUATE TRAPPED FAMILIES.

WORST HIT AREAS HOWEVER, WERE THE SOUTH GERMAN STATES OF BAVARIA AND BADEN-WUERTTEMBERG WHERE SEVERAL RIVERS FLOODED THEIR BANKS, MAKING ROADS IMPASSABLE AND BRINGING TRAFFIC TO A COMPLETE STANDSTILL.

RAPIDLY DROPPING TEMPERATURES IN THE SOUTH AND WEST OF THE COUNTRY COULD SON HELP CHECK THE FLOODING, THE WORST OF IT DUE TO MELTING SNOW.
