    COMMUNIST VIETCONG KNOCKED OUT THE SOUTHERN SECTION OF SOUTH VIETNAM' MAIN RAILWAY LINE YESTERDAY (MONDAY) WHEN THEY MINED A PASSENGER TRAIN IN BIEN HOA PROVINCE, ABOUT TEN MILES NORTH OF SAIGON. SEVEN PEOPLE WERE INJURED, FOUR OF THEM SERIOUSLY AND SOME 250 YARDS OF TRACK HAD BEEN BADLY DAMAGED.

    THE VIETCONG DETONATED THE MINE ELECTRICALLY AS THE DIESEL-ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE WAS PASSING OVER IT. THROWING THE LOCOMOTIVE, ONE PASSENGER CAR AND ONE FREIGHT CAR OFF THE RAILS.

    THE TRAIN, WHICH WAS BOUND FOR PHAN THIET, 100 MILES NORTHEAST OF SAIGON, WAS NOT ESCORTED BY ARMED GUARDS. COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN SAIGON AND THE NORTHERN PART OF THE LINE ARE NOW COMPLETELY SEVERED. IT ONLY REOPENED ON SUNDAY (4 APRIL) AFTER A SIMILAR MINING EARLY LAST WEEK.

    THE TRAIN WAS DERAILED NEAR A SOUTH KOREAN ARMY CAMP AT DI AN, WHICH WAS ATTACKED BY VIETCONG LAST FRIDAY NIGHT (2 APRIL). ELEVEN KOREANS WERE WOUNDED IN THE ATTACKS, WHEN MORTAR AND SMALL ARMS FIRE POURED INTO THE CAMP.
