  • Description

The European Parliament opened a three-day session in Luxembourg on Wednesday (4 April) -- aimed at settling the contentious farm prices issue within the European Economic Community.

The session was scheduled for later in April but was brought forward to allow members to debate the pricing issue before the prices were fixed by the nine-nation Council of Ministers.

Members of the community are widely spilt on the setting of the prices for the coming year.

A group of British and Danish representatives tabled a motion prior to this week's meeting rejecting the proposal for a 2.76 per cent price rise. Britain wants a freeze in prices to combat inflation.

Other countries want an increase of up to four per cent in agricultural prices.

The overall 2.76 per cent rise recommended by the Parliament's agricultural committee was highlighted by an 11 per cent rise in beef prices. The commission wants to encourage beef production which is lagging well behind demand.
