INTRODUCTION: An extreme leftist urban guerrilla group is thought to be responsible for the kidnapping of the son of a prominent Italian Socialist politician in Naples on Tuesday (5 April). The kidnapped man is Signor Guido de Martino, the son of Francesco de Martino, a former Socialist leader.
SYNOPSIS: Signor Guido de Martino is a local Socialist politician and school teacher. It's thought he has been kidnapped by the "Armed Proletarian Nuclei", whose declared aim is the overthrow of the state and democracy in Italy. Signor de Martino was abducted near his home and neighbours saw him seized by four people and bundled into a waiting car. It's thought that the kidnapping's politically motivated and the ransom may be the release of terrorist prisoners. Police searched near the de Martino's home for clues on Wednesday (6 April).
Road blocks have also been set up in Naples and members of the special anti-terrorist squad from Rome have been called in. The kidnapping has been greeted with anger in the city. Workers were to stage a four-hour strike on Thursday (7 April) to protest.
Leading politicians were to address a mass demonstration and the strikes were agreed by a meeting of politician and union leaders. The action's designed to show that ordinary people have no sympathy for revolutionary terrorist groups.
