  • Description

Talks which may open the way for a peaceful settlement of the six year old Algerian war: President Bourguiba of Tunisia - immediately after arriving in France - talked with President de Gaulle in private for five hours at Rambouillet, the President's country residence near Paris. First reports said the meeting produced "favourable" results.

Afterwards the two Presidents were joined by French Prime Minister Debre and Foreign Minister Couve de Murville; by Tunisian Foreign Minister, N. Mokkaden, and Information Minister, N. Masmoudi; and by a number of advisers, among them President Bourguiba's son, who is on his way to Washington as Tunisian Ambassador.

    N. Masmoudi has been acting as "go-between" for the two Presidents in arranging the talks, while H. Bourguiba has been on holiday in Switzerland, and also for the Algerian rebel leaders based in Tunis.

At Rabouillet, strict security precautions were taken, and cameramen were allowed only a "lightning" visit to film the two Presidents, who have never met each other before. Later, President Bourguiba flew to Morocco for the funeral of King Mohammed.

In Paris, there were clashes between police and right-wing demonstrators, who started to march through the city chanting "Algeria is French" and "Bourguiba murderer".
