  • Description

The Duke of Edinburgh - who recently made his first flight in a glider-went up for a second "flip" when he visited the National Gliding Championships on Sunday, July 28.

Held at Lasham Aerodrome, Hampshire, the championships have attracted world-wide entries and the flying-control officer handles a major "headache" every day with so many radioless sailplanes in the air.

Piloting a Royal Navy helicopter, the Duke of Edinburgh "dropped in" early in Sunday and was met on the tarmac by the Chairman of the British Gliding Association, Mr. Philip Wills.

Back on the briefing area, Mr. Wills gave the opening speech which was followed by a short address from the Duke. Then the Duke joined the rest of the pilots and crews for briefing.

Out on the assembly area, Prince Philip was introduced to a number of glider crews including the teams from the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. He was also introduced to Mrs. Rika Hardwood, the only woman pilot taking part in the display, and holder of two world records.

Finally, the Duke was introduced to the Chief Flying Instructor, Mr. Derek Piggott, with whom he was to make his second flight in a "Eagle" sailplane.

Towed by a Tiger Moth biplane and flagged off by the batwoman, Mrs. Peter Hampton, the Duke made a short circuit of the 'field before landing again.

Back on the airfield, the Duke returned to the Navy helicopter which he flew back to Windsor for a polo engagement.

Among those taking part in the rally is Miss Sue Burgess, 22 year-old parachute jumper and glider pilot who has been making daily demonstration jumps at the display.

She is assisted by another former paratrooper, Mike Reilly, who is also making demonstration jumps.
