Background: WHITE SPECTATORS ONLY WERE ADMITTED TO THE PRETORIA GROUND YESTERDAY AS THE AUSTRALIANS OPENED THEIR THREE-MONTH CRICKET TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICA. HOWEVER, A SMALL BAND OF NONWHITE GROUND STAFF WERE AMONG THE CROWD TO SEE THE AUSTRALIANS MAKE SHORT WORK OF A WEAK NORTH-EASTERN TRANSVAAL BATTING SIDE.

THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NORTH-EASTERN TRANSVAAL CRICKET UNION, MR. ARTHUR GRACE, SAID GATE-KEEPERS HAD BEEN INSTRUCTED TO LET ONLY WHITES INTO THE GROUND. HE SAID THE UNION HAD RECEIVED NO OFFICIAL APPLICATION FROM ANY NON-WHITE ORGANISATION FOR NON-WHITES TO BE ADMITTED.

ON THE FIELD, THE HOME SIDE WERE FIRST TO BAT, BUT SOON BEGAN TO GIVE WAY TO A VIGOROUS BOWLING PERFORMANCE BY GLEESON. IN 18 OVERS, GLEESON TOOK THREE WICKETS WHILE CONCEDING ONLY 25 RUNS. EVEN MORE SUCCESSFUL WAS CONNOLLY'S FOUR WICKETS IN 14 OVERS FOR THE LOSS OF 27 RUNS.

STACKPOLE FINISHED OFF THE NORTH-EASTERN TRANSVAAL INNINGS WITH TWO CONSECUTIVE STRAIGHT BALLS, ALL OUT IN 210 MINUTES FOR ONLY 109. AT THE CLOSE OF PLAY, THE TOURISTS HAD REACHED 99 FOR ONE, THEIR CAPTAIN, BILL LAWRY CONTRIBUTING A HALF CENTURY.
