SYNOPSIS: The start of British Airways thousand kilometre sports car race held at Brands Hatch on Sunday. The race was the ninth in the World Championship series and as expected was a fight between the French Matra-Simcas and British Gulf-Fords. Though the French crews had the faster cars, the twisty Kent circuit suited the British team admirably and they recorded very fast times in practice runs.

The two Matra-Simcas were driven as usual by Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Jean-Pierre Jarier, and by Henri Pescarolo and Gerard Larrousse. The latter pair scored all five victories which earned the Matra-Simca team the World Championship title last year and have scored three of the team's seven wins this year. The British Gulf Ford team had a stroke of bad luck when their top diver Derek Bell spun onto the grass and damaged the nose of his car.

This is Jean-Pierre Beltoise in Car No 1. His Matra-Simca 670C sports car has a powerful V12 engine which produces up to 490 horsepower. Beltoise and Jarier returned the fastest lap on the for and a quarter kilometre circuit with a time of one minute twenty-two point six seconds.

Beltoise's team-???ate Henri Pescarolo in Car No 2 scored a hat-trick of sports car victories at Le hans this year, a feat achieved only once before.
