  • Description

SECURITY GUARDS STAND WATCH TONIGHT (TUESDAY) OVER A COLLECTION OF SOME OF THE WORLD'S RAREST STAMP. THEY'VE BEEN ASSEMBLED AT THE ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL IN LONDON IN AN EXHIBITION MARKING ONE HUNDRED ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF THE PUBLICATION OF A POSTAGE STAMP CATALOGUE BY THE FIRM OF STANLEY GIBBONS. THE EXHIBITION OPENS TOMORROW.

THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE EXHIBITION IS THE 'ONE CENT GUIANA' - THE MOST VALUABLE SCRAP OF PAPER IN THE WORLD. AT PRESENT IT IS INSURED FOR GBP200,000 - 56 MILLION TIMES ITS 1856 FACE VALUE. THE VALUE OF THIS STAMP IS NOT THE ONLY THING THAT WILL ATTRACT COLLECTORS TO IT. FEW PEOPLE HAVE EVER SEEN IT. THE IDENTITY OF THE AMERICAN WHO OWNS IT HAS NEVER BEEN REVEALED - AND HE RARELY ALLOWS IT TO BE SHOWN IN PUBLIC. IT WAS LAST SEEN IN LONDON IN 1923 - AND HAS BEEN ON PUBLIC DISPLAY ONLY THREE TIMES SINCE 1940.

THE RARE STAMPS ON DISPLAY COME FROM MANY LANDS. MOST OF THEM HAVE BECOME VALUABLE THROUGH SOME FLAW IN THEIR PRINTING. OTHERS BECAUSE OF THEIR RARITY.

THIS IS THE MOST AMBITIOUS EXHIBITION STAGED BY A STAMP FIRM - AND BEFORE IT CLOSES ON SATURDAY, PHILATELISTS FROM MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD ARE EXPECTED TO SPEND SOME TIME GAZING AT THE RARITIES THAT EACH DREAMS TO OWN...
