    Rescue workers are filmed at the scene of the Yugoslav coal mine disaster, October 1, when 62 miners died at Podvis, in the Knajazevac coalfield, eastern Serbia. Film also shows miners, wearing pit overalls and helmets standing guard over the coffins, at the funeral, October 3.

    President of the Serbian Government, Jovan Veselinov, watched the rescue workers in action as they handled the worst tragedy in Yugoslav mini history.

    Disaster occurred when 118 miners were below. Many were trapped following an underground explosion caused by fire breaking out in transformer.

    Local rescue workers were reinforced by teams from three other collieries. They toiled through the night to reach men trapped by fire and roof falls. Next day special firefighters were flown from Belgrade and the fire was extinguished 24 hours after it had started.
