  • Description

The Chinese and Ethiopian national athletic teams competed against each other in a track and field meet in Addis Ababa on Saturday (11 December).

SYNOPSIS: The Chinese team arrived with a pledge of putting "friendship first and competition second." However, that didn't stop some of their athletes from turning in world class performances.

It was expected that the Ethiopians would dominate the track events. But the Chinese produced some surprises in the sprints. Their first winner was Chang Yan-yan who raced away with the women's 100 metres in the time of 12.4 seconds.

The men's 100 metres led to another Chinese success. Kao Chi-hsien was an easy winner, in 11.0 seconds although Ethiopia's Fekadu Arega made up good ground after a bad start to finish second in 11.5 seconds.

In the men's high jump Tao Hong set a new national Ethiopian record with a jump of 2.0 metres.

The middle distance races were thought to be beyond the Chinese athletes at this stage of their development. The Ethiopian's natural distance running ability and their home conditions appeared to give them great advantage over the Chinese. But in the women's 1500 metres, China's Wu Feng-hsia proved the experts wrong. While her countrymen Liu Pao was winning the men's javelin, the young Chinese runner was establishing a commanding lead. She went on to win the event in a time of 4.50.7, finishing almost five seconds ahead of her nearest rival.

Things returned to the expected in the men's 1500 metres. Here Ethiopia's Takele Worku proved to be in a class on his own. He won the event in 3.49.3 with fellow Ethiopians Abebe Zerihun and Adugna Lemma filling the minor places.

An event which both pleased and impressed the crowd and the Chinese athletes and officials was a spontaneous 100 metres race for young boys. Despite a rugged start the boys soon settled into some stylish running.

The race proved a mini triumph for young Addissu Dagne.

After the meet was concluded athletes from both countries saluted the 8,000 strong crowd.
