SPEAKING AT THE FESTIVAL, THE CHIEF OF MAMFE, NANA MANTEAW PANYIN ABASIO THE II, SAID IT WAS LAMENTABLE THAT A POTENTIALLY AGRICULTURE COUNTRY LIKE GHANA SHOULD HAVE TO IMPORT FOOD AND CALLED ON THE PEOPLE TO REDOUBLE THEIR EFFORTS TO INCREASE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION.

THE CHIEF WAS LOUDLY CHEERED BY HIS SUBJECTS AS HE WALKED IN A PROCESSION THROUGH THE MAIN STREETS OF THE TOWN TO THE DURBAR GROUND, AND THERE SAT IN STATE OF RECEIVE HOMAGE FROM HIS SUB-CHIEFS AND PEOPLE. THE CEREMONY REACHED ITS CLIMAX WHEN POTS OF PALM WINE WERE BROUGHT TO THE DURBAR GROUND FOR WHAT THE PEOPLE CALLED "COMMUNITY DRINK". THE DRINKING OF THE WINE SIGNIFIED THAT ALL PROBLEMS IN THE TOWN HAD BEEN SOLVED.

THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY THE POURING OF A LIBATION BY THE CHIEF LINGUIST, OPARE AKURANG, WHO PRAYED THAT THERE BE PEACE AND HARMONY IN THE TOWN. HE ALSO PRAYED FOR PROSPERITY FOR THE TOWN AND LONG LIFE FOR THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF GHANA'S RULING NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL (N.C.L.). THE DAY WAS ROUNDED OFF WITH DRUMMING AND DANCING.
