Background: South Korea has completed one of its biggest military exercises just five days before reunification talks resume with North Korea. Mr Choi Kyu-Hah, President of South Korea, saw the climax of the five-day manoeuvre which was code-named "Victory".

SYNOPSIS: Military aircraft, including Phantom jets, joined in the exercises which took place near the Western sector of the demilitarised zone -- an area which has separated the two Koreas for over thirty years. On Wednesday (6 February), North and South Korea will resume high level talks on the reunification of their two countries.

About six-hundred local and foreign officials watched the mock battle which was called operation "Victory". Among them was General John Wickham, the Commander of some thirty-eight thousand American troops stationed in the area.

Last month, the United States was strongly criticised by North Korea for holding a military exercise near Panmunjom. But the American-led United Nations Command said the manoeuvres did not violate the 1953 Korean armistice ...

Now North and South Korea have a basis for reviving political talks which broke down a year after they started in 1972. Once again they'll be searching for a way to reunite their divided peninsula.
