  • Description

Moscow in the evening, on May 1 - after the big parade the bright lights of the city.

Millions pushed through the packed streets in a continuous stream. A dozen abreast at times, they admired the illuminations. All major buildings were bathed in the glare of thousands of floodlights.

Space and peace were the twin May Day themes this year. Light displays flashed the name of spaceman Yuri Gagarin, strings of lights framed pictures of Gagarin and others connected with the first space flight venture. An illuminated tableau showed a huge rocket soaring above a glove, with the area of the Soviet Union surrounded by lights, and curves of light shooting up towards the moon, towards Venus and Mars - the Russians' next space aims.

As usual, Soviet emblems and Communist slogans played a prominent part in the illuminations. One of the few light displays in the least reminiscent of west European commercial advertising decorated the front of a railway station, showing the outline of an engine and carriages.

Main attraction amongst this riot of light and colour - a fireworks display to round off the May Day celebrations.
