  • Description

India and Pakistan on Tuesday (29 August) reaffirmed that they were determined to carry out the provisions of the Similar agreement which laid the basis for a durable peace between the two countries.

A joint statement issued after five days of talks between top level officials said the two sides had agreed to extend the time limit for the withdrawal of their troops from occupied areas until September 15. Under the Simla agreement, signed by the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Gandhi, and Pakistan's President Bhutto, the withdrawal by both sides should have been completed on Sunday.

The statement spoke of the "need to resolve any doubts that may have arisen on either side" about the implementation of the Simla accord.

Both Indian and Pakistani Government officials expressed satisfaction with the latest agreement.
