  • Description

Greek-Cypriot anti-American feeling exploded into violence today (August 19) when the United States Ambassador to Cyprus was killed as shots were fired at his Embassy by angry demonstrators.

Ambassador Rodger Davis, a 53-year-old diplomat and Middle East expert, fell mortally wounded when a mob of Greek-Cypriots stormed the Embassy, furious at the U.S. failure to stop the Turkish advance in Cyprus. It happened as Turkish forces reinforced positions only three miles (five kms) from the capital.

About a thousand demonstrators were involved, some armed with sub-machine guns and grenades. Some were seen firing point blank through Embassy windows.

Mr. Davis was hit in the chest by a bullet passing through his office window. A woman Greek-Cypriot secretary ran to help him, was hit by another bullet and died instantly.

Acting Cyprus President Glafkos Clerides had been holding a press conference when news of the attack reached him. He immediately went to the Embassy, where the mortally wounded Mr. Davis was being escorted to a Nicosia clinic.

Mr. Clerides was among the first of several leaders to denounce the shooting -- he referred to it as "an atrocious crime."
Ambassador Davis, a widower with two children, only officially took up his post in Cyprus one week before the coup overthrowing Archbishop Makarios.

Coverage includes commentary by British Broadcasting Corporation reporter Mike McKay, transcribed overpage with an on-camera introduction.
