Background: The process of General Election for electing India's Seventh Lok Sabha (Parliament) got under way in New Delhi. Chief Election Commissioner Mr M.L. Sakhder called a meeting of electoral officers from all India to start the process of election. The election machinery is being geared to meet the challenge of short notice in holding elections in a country of the size of a sub continent. Actual polling is expected to be held in the middle of December and the election commission is planning to finish polling all over India in one day unlike in the past when the polling has been spread over two to three days considering the huge size of the constituencies.
