Background: The Liberian tanker "Pacific Glory" which was refloated on Friday (6th November) after running aground off the Isle of Wight two weeks earlier, was today (Saturday 7th November) being towed by Dutch and British salvage tugs into Lyme Bay on the Dorset coast of the English mainland, where a close inspection of the vessel will be made by divers in more sheltered waters.

Persistent gales and high seas have hampered detailed inspections and salvage work so far, and although no further loss of the oil cargo has been reported, Dorset and Devon county officials fear a pollution threat to their coastal resorts such as Exmouth. The protest building up on shore is over possible attempts to transfer more of the damaged tanker's cargo of oil to another vessel.

Ironically, one casualty of the salvage operation has been a tug keeping watch on pollution. It ran aground on the Isle of Wight during a gale, but the crew managed to scramble to safety.
