  • Description

GREEK TROOPS WHICH HAVE BEEN IN CYPRUS ILLEGALLY -- THOUGHT TO NUMBER ABOUT 7,000 -- HAVE BEEN LEAVING UNDER THE GRECO-TURKISH AGREEMENT TO REMOVE ALL 'ILLEGAL' SOLDIERS FROM THE ISLAND. THE REMOVAL OF THE GREEK TROOPS WAS ONE OF TURKEY'S CHIEF DEMANDS IN THE RECENT CRISIS WHICH BROUGHT THE TWO NATIONS CLOSE TO WAR.

THE 7,000 OR SO GREEK TROOPS SAID TO BE IN THE ISLAND ILLEGALLY ARE IN EXCESS OF THE BATTALION OF 950 MEN PERMITTED BY THE 1960 TREATY OF ALLIANCE BETWEEN GREECE, TURKEY AND CYPRUS.

TURKEY HAS 650 MEN IN THE ISLAND UNDER THE TREATY AND AN ESTIMATED FEW HUNDRED OTHERS SAID TO HAVE BEEN BROUGHT IN ILLEGALLY TO LEAD TURKISH CYPRIOT FIGHTING UNITS.

IN A BRIEF FAREWELL MESSAGE BEFORE THE FIRST OF THE TROOPS LEFT, PRESIDENT MAKARIOS SAID HE WANTED TO EXPRESS THE GREEK CYPRIOTS 'DEEP GRATITUDE' FOR THE SERVICES THE TROOPS HAD GIVEN TO CYPRUS.
