Background: Somalia's President Siad Barre has been visiting Egypt for two days of talks with Egyptian leader, President Hosni Mubarak. According to a senior Egyptian aide, the two leaders discussed a number of world and regional issues. They talked about developments on the Israeli-occupied West Bank and the situation in the Horn of Africa. They were also reported to have spoken about joint projects in the field of agriculture and livestock. In addition, Mr. Barre briefed the Egyptian president on recent talks he held with the United States, Canada and West Germany. Somalia is one of three Arab states that has maintained relations with Cairo after Egypt signed its 1979 peace treaty with Israel. President Barre arrived in Cairo on Thursday (1 April). He flew from the airport by military helicopter to the Tahra Palace where the talks were held.
