  • Description

AERIAL SHOTS TAKEN FEB 13 GIVE PARTICULARLY STRIKING VIEWS OF THE CLUTTERED NEW YORK SKYLINE; THEY ALSO SHOW THE TWO 'FIRST LADIES' OF SEA-GOING LUXURY, THE LINERS "FRANCE" AND "UNITED STATES" - BERTHED SIDE-BY-SIDE - MAKING THEIR FIRST APPEARANCE TOGETHER IN THE ICE-BOUND HARBOUR.

BUT IT WAS ONE OF THE RARE OCCASIONS WHEN THEY WILL MEET IN NEW YORK HARBOUR, AS THE UNITED STATES LINES (WITH THE APPROVAL OF THE U.S.MARITIME ADMINISTRATION) AND THE FRENCH LINE HAVE AGREED TO HAVE THEIR SHIPS SAILING FROM OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC IN A GIVEN WEEK.

THE "UNITED STATES" SAILED INTO NEW YORK AT 8.A.M.THAT MORNING, AT THE END OF A CARIBBEAN CRUISE.FIVE AND A HALF HOURS LATER THE "FRANCE" - EASILY RECOGNISABLE BY THE AILERON SMOKE DEFLECTORS ON HER FUNNELS - SET SAIL FOR EUROPE.

A SECOND MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE WHEN THE "UNITED STATES" RETURNS FROM HER SECOND AND FINAL FOURTEEN-DAY CRUISE THIS WINTER.
