  • Description

A SPORT WHICH ORIGINATED A THOUSAND YEARS AGO IN MEDIEVAL EUROPE IS STILL CARRIED ON TODAY IN HOLLAND. IT IS TILTING, AND EACH YEAR DUTCHMEN IN THE ZEELAND TOWN OF MIDDELBURG COMPETE FOR PRIZES.

THIS YEAR, MORE THAN 100 MEN FROM THROUGHOUT ZEELAND, MOSTLY FARMERS AND THEIR SONS, CAME WITH THEIR BIG STEEDS TO COMPETE FOR THE PRIZES, INCLUDING A CUP DONATED BY QUEEN JULIANA.

EACH HORSEMAN, CARRYING HIS LANCE, CHARGES TOWARDS A SMALL RING SUSPENDED FROM A CROSSBAR. THE IDEA IS TO SPEAR THE RING AND CARRY IT OFF. ACCURACY IS ESSENTIAL, AS THE RING IS ONLY AN INCH (2.5 CMS) WIDE.

THE WINNER IS THE MAN WITH THE GREATEST ACCURACY.

(MIDDELBURG HAS HELD ITS TILTING COMPETITION SINCE 1767 WHEN THE DISTRICT'S ARISTROCRATS REVIVED THE SPORT, WHICH AT THE TIME WAS ON THE WANE THROUGHOUT EUROPE).
