  • Description

In 1974 Royal Air Force Laarbruch, one of the largest operational stations in Royal Air Force Germany, received the freedom of the town of Weeze. This was the first time that such an honour had been given to an RAF station overseas. The freedom was given to the Station to celebrate twenty-one years of good relations with the town which is situated some three kilometres from the Station. Recently, to celebrant the first anniversary of this honour, the Station exercised its right to march through the town with "Colours flying, drums beating and bayonets fixed". The detachment of officers and men from No 1 Squadron RAF Regiment, based at RAF Laabrouch and commanded by Flt Lt David Griffiths, marched through the town after being inspected by the Burgomaster, Herr Pannon.

RAF Laarbruch is a base for Phantom and Buccaneer aircraft of RAF Germany and is situated on the German/Dutch border in an area which has always been one of most heavily fought over regions of Europe. The Siegfreid Line ended at this point and the district was almost obliterated during some of the most bitterly fought battles at the end of the second world war. Despite the warring traditions of the area relationships between Laarbruch and the surrounding towns, both German and Dutch, are good. Many local civilians are employed at Laarbruch and many service personnel from Station live private accommodation in the town of Weeze.
