  • Description

The second destroyer to be built in West Germany since the and of the war - the 3,000-ton "Schleswig-Holstein" - was launched at Hamburg August 28. She is the sister ship to the "Hamburg" launched in March this year. Representing the West German Government was Admiral Ruge, Inspector of the Navy.

West German naval strength is now 8 destroyers - six of them bought from the United States. There are plans to build eight larger destroyed in West Germany if the restriction limiting tonage of warships to 3,000 tons is revised by the Western European Union.

NATO has been asked by the West German defence Ministry to support a request to raise this limit to 5,000 tons for vessels capable of carrying missiles.

The "Schleswig-Holstein" will be stationed at Flensburg on the Baltic Sea. Two similar destroyers will be built by Hamburg's Stuelcken ship-yards by 1963.
