MAGEED: "I am confident that your meeting will impart new dimensions to the problem of water resources and management and set new directions for the future of Africa. Africa is endowed with some of the largest rivers, lakes and aquifers in the world. However, as is often the case, these water resources are unevenly distributed over space and time and consequently one finds extreme variations"

ADEDEJI: "The role of water in present agricultural productivity and production is too obvious to need and special emphasis on my part at these talks. Its place and role in industry, not only from the viewpoint of consumptive use and industrial processes, but also as a need of generating hydro-electric energy whose importance is obvious in the present world energy situation. By providing cheap, hydroelectric energy for industrial production, water becomes a great catalyst in stimulating industrial activity. It is the (indistinct) logic of adversity that we should band together and pool our resources in our fight for the better destiny. We have to consider the role of the United Nations Water Conference and the role of these regional meetings in the world in the African context. On the premise that the principals for strength for more effective development water resources in developing countries are economic, social, legal and institutional, rather than technical, the main emphasis of the water conference is probably in the realm of policy making. I wish you well in your deliberations. Thank you."
