  • Description

AFTER AN ALL-OUT SEARCH BY TROOPS AND AIRCRAFT FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE CONGOLESE-RHODESIAN BORDER, THE WRECKAGE OF A UNITED NATIONS DC-6 AIRLINER, CARRYING UN SECRETARY-GENERAL DAG HAMMARSKJOELD FROM LEOPOLDVILLE TO PEACE TALKS WITH PRESIDENT TSHOMBE, WAS FOUND LATE SEPT 17 IN A FOREST NEAR THE NORTHERN RHODESIAN TOWN OF NDOLA, WHERE THE TALKS WERE TO HAVE TAKEN PLACE.

WHEN HIS AIRCRAFT WAS REPORTED OVERDUE ON ITS 1,000-MILE FLIGHT, AIRCRAFT OF THE RHODESIAN AIR FORCE, USING NDOLA AS A BASE, OPERATED A CONTINUOUS SWEEP ALONG THE BORDER. TROOPS AT MACUMBO AND OTHER BORDER POINTS WERE ORGANISED TO ASSIST POLICE ON THE GROUND. AN AFRICAN CHARCOAL BURNER FIRST FOUND THE SMOULDERING WRECKAGE. THEN IT WAS SPOTTED FROM THE AIR, AND SEARCH PARTIES CONVERGED ON THE AREA. BUT THEY WERE TOO LATE. MR. HAMMARSKJOELD'S BODY WAS FOUND AMONG THE SCATTERED DEBRIS, ALONG WITH THOSE OF TWELVE OTHER MEMBERS OF HIS PARTY. THE ONLY SURVIVOR, AN AMERICAN SECURITY GUARD, WAS SERIOUSLY BURNED. HE IS NOW BEING TREATED IN NDOLA HOSPITAL. TWO MORE BODIES WERE LATER FOUND TWO MILES FROM THE WRECKAGE.

THE DC-6 HAD CRASHED THROUGH THE TREES, HIT THE GROUND, AND DISINTEGRATED. TWO OF ITS ENGINES HAVE STILL NOT BEEN FOUND. THE PILOT OF THE SPOTTER AIRCRAFT SAID: "THE PLANE EVIDENTLY PLOUGHED INTO THE GROUND. THERE WAS A LONG SCRAPE MARK WHERE HE WENT IN AND LOTS OF BITS OF WRECKAGE WHERE HE FINISHED UP. EVERYTHING AROUND THE WRECKAGE IS BLACKENED AND BURNT".

SERGEANT HAROLD JULIAN, THE SURVIVING SECURITY GUARD, SAID THE PLANE WAS IN CIRCUIT AROUND NDOLA AIRPORT, BUT TURNED BACK ON MR. HAMMARSKJOELD'S INSTRUCTIONS. SOON AFTERWARDS THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION, FOLLOWED BY SOME SMALLER ONES. EXPERTS INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH HAVE SO FAR REPORTED THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF HOSTILE ACTION EITHER FROM THE GROUND OR AIR.
