    THOUGH ANQUETIL WAS A FAVOURITE FROM THE BEGINNING HE DID NOT BECOME OVERALL LEADER UNTIL THE 17TH STAGE ON JULY 9 AT BAYONNE. HE WAS THEN LEADING HIS CLOSE RIVALS - FAVOURITES TOO - RAYMOND POULIDOR OF FRANCE, AND FEDERICO BAHAMONTES OF SPAIN.

    THE TOUR THEN DEVELOPED INTO A BATTLE BETWEEN THE THREE. POULIDOR'S FIVE YEARS YOUNGER, BAHAMONTES WHO THOUGH 36 PROVE HIMSELF STILL A DANGEROUS RIDER BY WINNING THE PRIZE FOR THE BEST CLIMBER.
