    BRITISH COLONY WAS JUST ONE OF MANY CHINESE COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD TO CELEBRATE THE FESTIVAL - HELD ON THE FIFTH DAY OF THE FIFTH MOON ACCORDING TO THE CHINESE CALENDAR.

    THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE CROWDED THE WATERFRONT TO SEE THE RACES. EACH BOAT HAD AN EFFIGY OF A DRAGON DECORATING ITS BOW. THE FESTIVAL'S PURPOSE IS TO DRIVE AWAY EVIL SPIRITS.

    IT COMMEMORATES THE DEATH OF THE GREAT CHINESE STATESMAN, SCHOLAR AND POET, CHU YUAN, WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE BY DROWNING IN A RIVER IN THE YEAR 278 B.C. AFTER HE HAD BECOME THE VICTIM OF A COURT INTRIGUE. BY RACING THE DRAGON BOATS, THE CHINESE KEEP AWAY EVIL SPIRITS, IN THE FORM OF FISH, FROM EATING HIS BODY.

    FROM START TO FINISH, IT WAS FAST PADDLING. IT HAD TO BE TO WIN.
