  • Description

ISRAEL, CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF STATEHOOD, HAS BEGUN REBUILDING PART OF THE OLD CITY OF JERUSALEM CAPTURED FROM JORDAN IN THE JUNE WAR.

ALTOGETHER AN AREA OF NEARLY 30 ACRES HAS BEEN REQUISITIONED AND CLEARED BY THE ISRAELIS. MOST OF THE AREA HAD BEEN LEFT DERELICT AND NEGLECTED SINCE THE WAR OF 1948 DESTROYED MOST OF THE BUILDINGS. AND WHAT WAS LEFT STANDING QUICKLY FELL INTO A STATE OF COLLAPSE.

FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS THE AREA FORMED PART OF THE JORDANIAN SECTION OF THE CITY, BUT SINCE THE JUNE SIX-DAY WAR IT'S BEEN ADMINISTERED BY ISRAEL. THEY SAY THAT MOST OF THE AREA THEY'VE REQUISITIONED HAD FOR GENERATIONS BEEN PART OF THE JEWISH QUARTER OF JERUSALEM.

ACCORDING TO THE ISRAELIS, THE JORDANIANS LEFT IT UNTENDED AND UNCARED FOR; SEWAGE PIPES WERE BLOCKED, STREETS CLOGGED WITH RUBBLE AND THE FEW REMAINING HOUSES THAT WERE HABITABLE WERE OCCUPIED BY ARABS.

A UNESCO DELEGATION ADVISED IN 1960 THAT JORDAN SHOULD UNDERTAKE LARGE-SCALE IMPROVEMENTS TO PREVENT THE AREA BECOMING A SLUM. BUT LITTLE WAS DONE. WHEN THE ISRAELI ARMY ENTERED THE CITY LAST JUNE OFFICERS SAID IT LOOKED LIKE AN UNTENDED GRAVEYARD, WITH A JORDANIAN ARMY CAMP THE DOMINANT FEATURE.

NOW THE ISRAELIS PLAN TO RESTORE THE SECTION, REBUILDING THE ROADS, THE COURT-YARDS AND THE ANCIENT PASSAGE WAYS. IN AN AREA OF THE WESTERN WALL THEY ARE LAYING A PAVED PLAZA FOR THE THOUSANDS OF PILGRIMS. IT'S ALSO PLANNED TO RESTORE SOME OF THE 60 SYNAGOGUES AND RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS WHICH WERE ONCE IN THE AREA.
