    MR DAVID NEWSON, UNITED STATES ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR AFRICAN AFFAIRS, YESTERDAY (25 FEBRUARY) VISITED THE 31-NATION AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK IN ABIDJAN.

    MR NEWSON WAS ON A TWO-DAY VISIT TO THE IVORY COAST DURING WHICH HE HAD TALKS WITH PRESIDENTS FELIX HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY ON INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS, AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS, AND CO-OPERATION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THE IVORY COAST.

    THE AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK HAS ITS HEADQUARTERS IN ABIDJAN'S NOUR-EL-HAYT (ARABIC FOR LIGHT OF LIFE) BUILDING AND IS CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF GRANTING LOANS TO SIERRA LEONE, LIBERIA, AND MALAWI.

    AT THE BANK, MR NEWSON, ACCOMPANIED BY THE UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR TO THE IVORY COAST, MR JOHN ROOTE, HAD TALKS WITH SEVERAL OF THE BANK'S OFFICIALS, INCLUDING ITS VICE-PRESIDENT, MAR ABDELAWAH LABIDI OF TUNISIA (THE BANK HAS HAD NO PRESIDENT SINCE THE RESIGNATION OF MR MAMDUN BEHEIRY OF SUDAN EARLIER THIS MONTH) AND ITS ECONOMIC ADVISER, MR QUARASHI OF PAKISTAN.

    MR NEWSON SAID AFTERWARDS THAT HE HAD SEEN GLAD OF THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AT FIRST HAND MORE ABOUT THE BANK, WHICH WAS IMPORTANT TO THE WHOLE OF AFRICA.
