Syria's deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mr. Abdul Halim Khaddam, has cut short his tour of the Gulf States after Tuesday's (October 25) attempt on his life at Abu Dhabi Airport. A gunman, believed to be a Palestinian, killed the United Arab Emirates Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Seif Bin Ghobash, in the attack but authorities believe the bullets were intended for the visiting Syrian Minister.

Mr. Khaddam met Emirates President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahayan for talks on reconvening Middle East peace talks in Geneva. The Syrian Minister then planned to visit Qatar and the attack came as he prepared to board his plane. A hail of bullets was fired from a balcony and Mr. Ghobash collapsed fatally wounded.
