  • Description

The Arab League Council on Monday (20 October) postponed until the following day the final session of its scheduled three-day meeting in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, after members had failed to agree on a number of central topics.

Secretary-General, Mr. Mahmoud Riad, said that the Council would meet again on Tuesday (21 October) to complete approval of recommendations made by sub-committees, including -- according to informed sources quoted by Reuters -- strategy on joint Arab co-operation and Arab boycott policy on foreign firms engaged in commerce with Israel.

The Council, in what was due to be its final day session, was unable to resolve inter-Arab disputes involving South Yemen and Oman, the tension between Morocco and Algeria over the future of the Spanish Sahara, and the conflict between Syria and Iraq.

Although members on Sunday (19 October) agreed in principle to a joint meeting of Arab Foreign and Information Ministers to co-ordinate information policy, the 20-nation Council has not yet been able to agree on a date for the already postponed summit of Arab heads of state. The meeting -- the eighth Arab summit -- was originally scheduled to be held in Somalia last June.

On the boycott question, Mr. Mohammad Mahgoub, Commissioner-General of the Boycott Office, said later that the Ford Motor Company of the United States was still on the official blacklist, despite an approach by Ford earlier in the month to be removed.
