  • Description

PROBLEMS ABOARD VOYAGER 11(TWO), THE DEEP SPACE PROBE LAUNCHED YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) NOW SEEM TO BE OVER. SCIENTISTS AT CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA, ARE OPTIMISTIC THAT THE HITCH WHICH THREATENED TO CRIPPLE THE 500 MILLION DOLLAR PROBE IS NOW ONLY SLIGHT. THE UNMANNED CRAFT GOT OFF TO A FLAWLESS START BUT TROUBLE WAS SOON MONITORED WHEN A BOOM HOLDING TWO TELEVISION CAMERAS AND CONTROLLING THREE SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTS FAILED TO EXTEND FULLY. BUT IT IS NOW BELIEVED THAT THE BOOM IS EITHER ALMOST OR FULLY EXTENDED. THERE WERE ALSO DOUBTS THAT ONE OF THE SPACECRAFT'S THREE GYROS WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. BUT THESE FEARS PROVED GROUNDLESS. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE VOYAGER 11 AND ITS SISTER CRAFT, VOYAGER 1 (ONE) WHICH IS TO BE LAUNCHED LATER, IS TO SEND BACK PHOTOS AND INFORMATION FROM JUPITER AND SATURN. IT IS HOPED THIS INFORMATION WILL HELP REVEAL SOME OF THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE'S ORIGIN. A LOOK AT THE EVEN MORE DISTANT PLANETS OF URANUS AND NEPTUNE IS ALSO PLANNED. VOYAGER 11 WILL PASS NEPTUNE IN 1979.
