  • Description

A strict curfew was in force on Monday (3 February in India's capital, New Delhi, after a riot over arrest of Moslem leader which left 10 people dead and 100 injured. The curfew was imposed for 48 hours.

Police kept a close watch on the area around the city's main mosque -- the Jama Masjid -- where the riot had been concentrated. The normally bustling streets there were empty and littered with debris from some 20 shops which had been burnt out. Other shops in the area were tightly shuttered.

The riot--- the worst in the capital for years -- began when followers of the Imam of the mosque, enraged at his arrest, attacked a police post and set fire to shops and vehicles.

The Imam, Syed Abdullah Bukhari, is being held in prison under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act. The Delhi District Magistrate said he posed a threat to Public order as he had been trying to inflame communal passions over the past year.
