The Greek President, Mr. George Papadopoulos, appeared in public for the first time on Friday (26th October), since he took over the top post of the country. The President was in Salonika, in northern Greece, to take part in celebrations for the liberation of the district from the Slave. The celebrations also marked the 33rd anniversary of the day in 1940, when Greece refused to accept an ultimatum from Italian forces poised to invade the country. This marked Greece's entry into World War Two.
The Greek Premier, Spyros Markezinis, was also making his first appearance in public since he was sworn in early this month. Both men attended a service at Saint Demetrius Cathedral before watching the military parade that marked the celebrations.
