  • Description

Swedish racing-driver Ronnie Peterson did the fastest qualifying time at the Almirante Park circuit in Buenos Ares on Saturday (January 12) for Sunday's Argentine Grand Prix -- the first of the 1974 championships. The Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi -- he and Peterson are considered the strongest contenders for the 1974 world title -- was the third fastest qualifier with a best??? time around a quarter of a second slower than Peterson's.

Peterson, driving a Lotus 72, raced round the 6,000 metre circuit in just over 1 minute 50 seconds -- a lap speed of 194 kilometres an hour. Second fastest qualifier was Switzerland's Clay Regazzoni driving a Ferrari. Fittipaldi was second in last year's world championships driving for Lotus, but this year has changed to McLarens. The Belgian driver,, Jackie Ickx, another contender for the world title, was the seventh feasted qualifier. At one point Ickx very narrowly missed a car in front which had spun out of control.

This year will see a fierce fight for the throne vacated by Jackie Stewart -- the 1973 champion who recently retired. the drivers, however, have to contend not only with each other but the world-wide fuel crisis as well.

Already it looks as if the South African Grand Prix will definitely be cancelled.

The eventual winner of Sunday's Argentine Grand Prix was Dennis Hulme of New Zealand driving McLaren, Niki Lauda was second, and Regazzoni third.
