  • Description

Since the beginning of the conclave, October 26, food is brought to the 51 cardinals by special assistants through doors opened especially for that occasion.

Security checks are made each time food enters so that no notes or papers are taken inside the conclave during the session.

Our film shows the food being brought to cardinals.

A day earlier, a door was shut firmly on the cardinals. It was locked on the outside.

It is guarded day and night and neither the cardinals, attendants, their three doctors, nor those members of the Vatican palace staff who have been authorised to remain at the conclave will be let out again - nor may anyone enter - until the 262nd Bishop of Rome has been elected.

These 51 voters 17 of them Italian, the rest representing nearly every race, will remain cut off from all direct contact with the world until their work is done.

The Palace they are in has been made by masons and joiners into a prison with one door and no outside windows.
