    Background: President Salvador Allende of Chile, Latin America's first elected Marxist Head of State, left Santiago yesterday (Wednesday) at the start of a two-week foreign tour taking him to Peru, Mexico, Cuba, New York - where he is to address the United Nations General Assembly - Moscow and Madrid.

    Before his departure, a huge popular rally gathered in the streets of the Capital to did him farewell. On the rostrum with him at the rally was General Carlos Prats, the Interior Minister who has been sworn in as Vice-President to take over the Government in the President's absence.

    SYNOPSIS: A huge popular rally through the streets of Santiago, as Chileans poured out to bid farewell to their President - Salvador Allende - on his departure for a two-week tour of America and Europe. The trip was originally planned for last month - but had to be postponed because of serious political and economic problems, caused by massive strikes which crippled the country.

    President Allende - here seen arriving at the rally accompanied by ministers and officers of the Armed Forces - is Latin America's first elected Marxist head of state.

    On the President's right - General Carlos Prats, the Interior Minister who has been sworn in as Vice-President, to take over the Government in Senor Allende's absence.

    Atop a huge stand depicting the mine-workers of Chile - President Allende addressed the crowds. His two-week tour is taking him to Lima, Mexico City, New York (where he will address the United Nations General assembly), Moscow, Paris, Madrid and Havana. The longest stays will be in New York. Moscow and Havana.
